Google’s John Mueller and Martin Splitt warned against creating separate markdown versions of websites purely to optimize for AI crawlers. They argued markdown lacks layout and visual design capabilities that improve human user experience, and maintaining parallel markdown/HTML versions doubles publishing work. Worse, broken AI-facing content often goes unnoticed since AI systems won’t complain the way human users would. The pair compared this approach to the failed “dynamic rendering” strategy of the past, advising publishers to instead improve their existing HTML rather than build separate AI-only versions.
